Hidden gems! Dolores Huerta: A Hero to Migrant Workers

Feliz martes, everyone!
As always we are starting off our week surrounded by amazing children’s books. In honor of Dolores Huerta and her upcoming birthday on April 10th we will review Dolores Huerta: A Hero to Migrant Workers by Sarah Warren, illustrated by Robert Casilla.

In this story we learn the many roles Dolores Huerta had to take on to fight for migrant workers. From teacher to storyteller, warrior to organizer, Dolores used all these different roles to be effective in la lucha, or the fight for fair working conditions for migrant workers. What really endears this book to me, besides the fact that it highlights the important role Dolores played in the migrant worker’s strike, is the way each page opens up with a new role. This format allows children to understand what it takes to be an effective leader and allows them to visualize what this looks like. It shows, by the end of the story, the many qualities a leader has. Combined with the illustrations by Robert Casilla that capture the spirit of the movement through brilliantly rendered pictures drawn in tableau style, this is definitely a book worth having in your collection. If you are a teacher or just someone that loves educational resources, at the end of the book the author has included a timeline of the Delano strike, as well as resources to learn more about Dolores Huerta.
Think this is a great book? Make sure to keep an eye for it and other great finds in our children’s section.

  1. I'm so excited for Dolores Huerta's upcoming birthday. What an awesome way to celebrate! Thank you for this wonderful review. I'm glad you liked the way the book highlights the many roles Dolores played to change the world. I did that to satisfy my students who are crazy about superheroes. I wanted to introduce them to the real powers true heroes demonstrate in their work. These are powers we can all have if we follow the leadership of people like Dolores. Thank you for connecting your audience with hidden gems!
